I have been loving looking at all the wonderful mixed media pieces on other people’s blogs. I often thought about doing one myself, but just never did. Then, I was unpacking some things (yes, I still have some boxes that I never unpacked from when I got married 17 months ago!) and I came across a charcoal drawing I did about 15 years ago. I used to do these portraits of other people and give them to the person. Well, this one was of me so I had no one to give it to, lol! Anyway, I thought it needed a home and then was at the craft store and saw that canvasses were on sale and immediately knew I wanted to make a mixed media piece featuring my charcoal self portrait. (For those of you who don’t think this looks like me, see my before braces pics, lol! My face shape changed a lot!)
As you can see in the pic I used a wide brush stroke of a very bold red. I adhered some cut outs of Teresa Collins Document Your Story paper pack. I liked the words, they seemed to fit with my self portrait. Then I went over the whole canvas with a crackle glaze to give it an antique feel. I then started layering papers and embellishing. I used lots of butterflies because I really love them, they make me happy! I used the label off of one of my favorite wines, a small pic of me, a pendant, clocks, steam punk gears, a fleur de lis, stamping, and some bling. It was really fun to this and my sweet husband said he might even make a frame for it!
